You may already have an understanding of this, but I can share this of what the Lord first taught me about receiving dreams and vision. There are three things I need to be obedient to, to understand and apply what the Lord shares with me in a dream or vision.
1. First of all, He made it really clear that I needed to be sure of where it came from. Is it from the Lord, the Holy Ghost or from another spirit, as in devil spirit. Now there should not be any fear here except the fear of the Lord. Ask the Lord to give you discernment between his voice, the devil's voice and your own inner voice, God is faithful and He will. When I was young in my walk there were times in the beginning I needed to hear the exact same thing from God so that I was confident enough to know it was Him. That changes though, praise God, as you do come to know and recognize His voice as you practice these things with Him. Knowing it is of Him then WRITE IT DOWN! Very important for me was to get up and write it down in the most detail as possible, every detail will have depth of meaning when the Lord gives it. He had to tell me three times the first time to get up and write it down, Lord forgive me for my laziness and stubbornness, pride in thinking, "Oh, I will remember it.".
1 John 4:1
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
There are many false prophets in the world simply because they did not understand or seek the Lord out on these things, they shared things with out Godly understanding or not being obedient to God's purpose in giving the dream of vision. Wait on Him.
2. Next, we must ask the Lord then to give us understanding of what He has shown us, we cannot lean unto our own understanding, it must come from Him. Sometimes this is immediate and other times it takes time, lots of time, all according to His wisdom. I had one vision from God that I did not receive the understanding of until ten years later, then it all fit into my understanding, limited as that is. Trust in His timing and the faithfulness of God.
Isaiah 55:11
“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
3. Then once we do have understanding we must ask Him what HE would have us do with this knowledge. Wisdom is applied knowledge and attempting to apply knowledge that God has given without God's wisdom in how to apply it leaves the door open for the enemy to steal the pearl of revelation and come against God's purpose in giving it to you. God will show us what to do with what he has given us, whether it is simply to pray for someone or something, or to share it, who specifically with and when.
1 Corinthians 2:12-13
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual."
Does this mean we should not be asking others for understanding? No of course not, I will say though if someone comes to me for interpretation of a dream or vision my first question is have you asked the Lord? Thank God we do have each other in the Body of Christ that we can come together and pray, and share of His wisdom and knowledge that He freely gives. There are those like Daniel that have a gift of dreams and visions and interpretation of them, there are always times in our walk with the Lord that we need the help of our brethren in Christ Jesus, praise GOD! That is why I am here, fellowship and the knowledge and wisdom the Lord has gifted my brothers and sisters, we do need each other. If God can then use me to benefit someone else and their walk with him then all the better, it is always such a pleasure and joy to be a part of God's purpose and His Kingdom, glory to God our Heavenly Father.
