Summary: God declared the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10). The story of creation is a prophetic picture of the seven millenniums of mankind on earth.
-1st Day: God created light & darkness, and separated the light from the darkness -1st Millennium: God created Adam; Adam sinned and was separated from God
-2nd Day: God created the waters, and divided the waters from the heavens -2nd Millennium: Noah saved when God judged earth by water
-3rd Day: God created dry land & plants yielding fruit & seed after their own kind -3rd Millennium: God called Abraham, gave him promise of seed
-4th Day: God created the lights in the heavens to be as signs for seasons & for years -4th Millennium: God began to send His prophets as lights to the people to reveal to them the things which God had decreed must be
-5th Day: God created living creatures, blessed them, told them to be fruitful & multiply & fill the waters & the earth -5th Millennium: God sent Jesus (when this millenium began) to bring the new creation to mankind
-6th Day: God created man in Their image, male & female; blessed them, told them to be fruitful/multiply, fill earth, have dominion over it -6th Millennium: man multiplied his knowledge & dominion of earth (fulfilled prophecy in other ways as well)
-7th Day: God ended His work which He'd made, & rested; He blessed the day and sanctified it -7th Millennium: God will bring the rule of His Messiah, and restore His Kingdom upon the earth
*Found this information in Benjamin Baruch's book "The Day of the Lord is at Hand." I had never heard it explained this way before, so I thought I'd share it.

The Epistle of Barnabas explicitly says there is a 6,000 year plan, leading to the thousand year millenium. God did say to me that it was written by Barnabas who traveled with Paul, and of the Holy Spirit. He didn't say it was perfect, but I found it a fascinating read. It can be found online for free.
I think the 6 day plan makes perfect sense and there's a LOT of scripture that typologically relates to it.
An example: Jesus died at the end of year 4,000. In the midst of the week. He remained with the Samaritan woman 2 more days. A day is a thousand years. From year 4,000 to 6,000, with the gentile church.
