Doug has talked about how Jesus is the "Word of God" capitalized 'W' and the bible is the "word of God" little 'w'. I know the bible is important I'm just confused how to improve my relationship with God and not get sidetracked by focusing only on the bible.

Well I believe praying to the Lord and talking to Him casually like a friend or a Father helps to bring you closer to Him. Also trying to remain transparent and holy and expressing the love of God is good in the relationship with Him and others. Bring whatever is in your mind or heart to God and remember that the one who loves Him is the one who keeps His commandments. Also spend time praying for others as well and bring the Lord into every area and situation in your life. Strive for the fruits of the spirit as well as obedience and humility. Walk in love and mercy. The Bible helps you learn more about God and it helps you transform into the image of Christ (also done by God) and equips you with everything you need. Search for His promises and commandments in the scriptures and incorporate it into your life and being.

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 1:3-11
According to verse 3 you cannot get "sidetracked" by seeking knowledge of him through the Bible because it's through the "GREAT and PRECIOUS" promises (verse 4) and your faith applied to them (experience) that you enter into relationship. That's the starting point. You learn, you practice, (Verses 3-7) you see it's true, you cement your faith in practice while God proves himself to you again and again.
Stubborn persistence in this brings POWER, the power to just know. TO BE "neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ..." To have a thought and to have God answer it as soon as you thought it. Don't put your Bible away. The disciples were told to "STAY IN JERUSALEM" until they receive power. Do you remember? Jerusalem is the Cross, it's the gospels. It's the suffering of the savior. This needs to get REALLY REALLY personal for you.
So just like with any person you've ever known, there's two kinds of knowledge. There's the raw data, that in every way describes them, that is essential to get to know them, the hard facts in black and white. Then there is an experiential knowledge that comes by having life with the person you love. To do that with Jesus add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge... you get the idea.
YOU NEED BOTH until the second one comes with POWER. When it does everything changes. The Bible becomes an old friend who introduced you to the love of your life. Your husband, the Lord Jesus Christ. That's it's primary purpose, to reveal God to you. When the substance comes you don't need the signpost anymore, not to find life in Christ anyway.
God's blessing and peace to you.
